Canada 4th Battalion antique WW1 solid sterling silver lapel pin militaria

A WW1 era lapel pin from the Canadian 4th Battalion.
 
I am advised by a UK military sergent that this item would have most likely been worn as a lapel pin, however, I myself do not know, I have no military background however I trust my friends advice.
 
The piece is solid sterling  silver and it does have marks, the front of this is etched with gorgeous detail showing the Canadian maple leaf.
 
One can read about the Canadian 4th Battalion, they were created to fight when the 1st world war was started.
